Deracination

The existence of independent, vibrant communities is anathema to capitalism. Capitalism, specially on its contemporary incarnation, is completely reliant on the atomisation of the individual. The process begins early in life, with mandatory schooling which aims to inculcate the right’ views and train the individual in a narrow field of technical expertise. The profound division of labour resulting from this process renders the individual powerless, afraid, and lonely.

Alienated from her labour, her community, and any source of meaning, the individual renders her loyalty to the system that has crippled her. By now, the system appears before her eyes as more than a simple convention — it has become a force of nature, ineluctable. The same narcotic pleasures relieve the ever-present anxiety of each night, leaving the same emptiness next morning.
